Myth

BIODIESEL IS AN EXPERIMENTAL FUEL.

Fact

Biodiesel is one of the most thoroughly tested renewable fuels in the world. A number of independent studies have been completed with the results showing biodiesel performs similar to regular diesel while benefiting the environment and human health. Biodiesel is the first and only renewable fuel to have completed the rigorous Health Effects testing requirements of the U.S. Clean Air Act. Biodiesel has been proven to perform similarly to diesel in more 500 million successful road miles in virtually all types of diesel engines, countless off-road miles and countless marine hours. Currently more than 400 major truck fleets in the US and European Union and at least 2 major fleets in South Africa use biodiesel.

Myth

BIODIESEL DOES NOT PERFORM AS WELL AS DIESEL.

Fact

Biodiesel has a higher Cetane number than regular diesel resulting in a more efficient burn in the combustion chamber. Engines using biodiesel run 10% cooler and significantly quieter with much less exhaust smoke emissions. In more than 10 million miles of testing, B20 showed similar fuel consumption, horsepower, torque, and haulage rates as conventional diesel fuel. Biodiesel also has superior lubrication properties than regular diesel enabling older vehicles to cope with low sulphur diesel 50ppm.

Myth

BIODIESEL DOESN’T PERFORM WELL IN COLD WEATHER.

Fact

Both biodiesel and regular diesel will gel in very cold temperatures. Although 100% biodiesel has a higher cloud point and pour point temperature than regular diesel, a B20 blend and lower are managed in the same way as regular diesel. A B5 blend has no impact on cold flow

Myth

BIODIESEL CAUSES FUEL FILTERS TO BLOCK.

Fact

Biodiesel does not cause fuel filters to block. Dirt in the fuel and fuel tank causes filters to block. Dirt in fuel tanks and fuel lines accumulates over time through the use of regular diesel. When biodiesel is used either as B100 or as a blend, the dirt in the fuel tank and fuel lines will gradually move to the fuel filter where it will slowly block the fuel filter. It may be necessary to do a fuel filter change outside of your next service interval. The net result is that biodiesel cleans the entire fuel system and it remains clean as long as a small percentage of biodiesel is used.

Myth

BIODIESEL CAUSES O-RINGS, SEALS AND GASKETS TO PERISH.

Fact

The use of biodiesel can soften and degrade certain types of elastomers and natural rubber compounds over time. All new vehicles today have biodiesel compatible fuel systems. Materials compatible with biodiesel are Teflon and Viton.

Myth

THERE IS NO BIODIESEL STANDARD

Fact

The biodiesel industry has been active in setting standards for biodiesel since 1994. There is a South African SABS specification for biodiesel which is SANS 1935.

Myth

BIODIESEL DOES NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT SHELF LIFE.

Fact

Regular diesel has a shelf life of 6 months. Biodiesel also has a shelf life of 6 months if stored under ideal conditions. Realistically, biodiesel has a 3 month shelf life.
